The Northern Manitoba Sector Council (NMSC), through Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM), has hired an Essential Skills Project Coordinator to implement the Northern Essential Skills Training Initiative. This is a three year (April 2009 to March 2012) $4.5 million project designed to provide training which leads to increased success rates for Manitobans wishing to enter Apprenticeship training. The focus of this initiative is for job training and skills development to meet identified local or regional gaps and, thus, is employer driven.
The labour market in Northern Manitoba requires skilled people, with ongoing shortages in trades and technical positions. The Northern Essential Skills Training Initiative will provide a focused industry training solution in support of employers and Aboriginal and northern residents who wish to enter into Apprenticeship streams. The initiative aims to introduce a proven training process that is responsive to the immediate needs of the labour market and northern industry. Low skilled and under-employed individuals are missing opportunities to be apprentices and journeypersons, particularly in the trades which are compulsory in Manitoba. Thus, the goal and outcome for individual project participants is to achieve red seal certification; and/or employment as an apprentice or journeyperson.
