Overview
Training to Employment (for the Town of Churchill) facilitated a 6-week work readiness training with a focus on tourism and hospitality in Churchill, Manitoba. The program was delivered in partnership with Northern Manitoba Sector Council, Workplace Education Manitoba, Indigenous Tourism Manitoba and Manitoba Tourism Education College.

Students
12 students were accepted into the program. 2 resigned immediately before the program and were replaced by 2 further participants from the waiting list. 10 successfully completed the program.
Of the 12 learners:
10 were Indigenous
2 were female
5 were youth (under the age of 30)
4 have not completed high school
3 had been recipients of EIA, 1 had been recipient of EI
8 had no source of income

Success Stories:
The completion rate of 83% is very positive and attributed to the training format and the positive relationships built between service providers as well as the welcoming learning environment at the Career Development & Community Resource Centre.
Learners reported a boost in their self-confidence, being better equipped to pursue their goals, higher motivation to keep working on their careers and overall better wellbeing after the program. In addition, they developed relationships with employers, learned about businesses that they didn’t know before and got a chance to look behind the scenes in a restaurant kitchen and hotel.
4 are pursuing further training, 1 is working on starting their own business and the remainder is actively looking for employment (with one tourism season ending in March and the next one not starting until June/July this might take a few weeks/months).
T2E will continue to work with all 10 (plus 1 who did not complete) on further training and/or employment opportunities, as needed.
