In collaboration with University College of The North (UCN), Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM) the Northern Manitoba Sector Council (NMSC) coordinated the development and delivery of Industry Training – Clerical Upgrades – Norway House Health Centre of Excellence, in Norway House, MB for 14 participants who are currently employed with the Norway House Health Centre of Excellence.  The completion of this program would enable the 18 students to gain further administrative education and medical terminology to fill vacant positions within the newly constructed Health Centre.

Program planning and development began in early 2024 with NHCN (Norway House Health Centre of Excellence), UCN and WEM.  Each student that was selected to participate in this Program had previously completed the LIFT program provided by WEM.  Each student that was selected to participate was currently employed in various positions with the Health Centre.  The entire point of the program was to upgrade each student to enable them to fill administrative positions within the Health Centre.

TRAINING SCHEDULE – 10 Months

WEM Lift Program

  • Although this was not part of our Program, this was the initial starting point for the NHCN to further train their staff.

UCN – CLERICAL UPGRADES (10 months)

  • All curriculum was completed by UCN.  The curriculum was based on the individual needs of each student.  A basic administrative program was developed to further educate each student for different clerical roles within the Health Centre.
  • All learning was completed via distance with modules composed by UCN.  UCN Instructor would meet (long distance learning) with the group of students to ensure they were up to date with their learning and classroom schedules.
  • NHCN assured both NMSC and UCN that each student would be given hours throughout the week to work on their learning plans.

We initially started this project with 14 participants, all female and all currently employed by NHCN.  Over the course of the first 6 months, we were left with 5 learners.  Many students that did enroll to take this course did not comply or start the training.  In February of 2025 I was contacted by the UCN instructor to ask if we could push back to allow more time for individual studies and to allow 3 out of the 5 students to get caught up with the curriculum.  NMSC agreed to this, as all training costs had already been paid to UCN and we would not incur any further costs.  The UCN instructor worked diligently to reach out to all students and help in any way possible to see the 5 remaining students’ graduate.  Due to personal issues/struggles we unfortunately had 3 students leave the program and the remaining 2 students graduated in August of this year (2025), however studies were completed in early July 2025.  The two (2) students that graduated, were excellent students that kept up to date with all studies as outlined in the program.  By completing this program, it has allowed these two individuals to pursue more challenging roles within the Health Centre.
