Overview 

In collaboration with Canadian Kraft Paper, the Northern Manitoba Sector Council (NMSC) coordinated the development and delivery of Industry Training – Passport to Employment @ CKP, in the Pas, MB for 10 participants from The Pas and surrounding areas.  Successful participants of this program would be hired Full-time by Canadian Kraft paper.   

Program planning and development began in the fall of 2024, this being the second (2nd) train to employee program that we have initiated with Canadian Kraft Paper.  After carefully reviewing the successes/failures of our previous Program with CKP, we changed the outline of this project slightly to provide better engagement from students. 

Program/Project to Consist of the following: 

  • Start date of February 10th, 2025. 
  • Five (2) weeks of Essential Skills Training, Life Skills provided by WEM.  Training took place @ CKP Administrative Building. 
  • One (1) week of Forestry Training, recommended by CKP and provided by Juha Jarvinen Consulting. 
  • Approx 4 weeks of Job Shadowing and onboarding CKP 
  • Successful completion and passing mark for the SSR Exam required by CKP for any full-time employment. 

TRAINING SCHEDULE – 9 WEEKS: 

Essential Skills Assessments (ESA) – SSR Exam 1st Attempt 

  • SSR Exam (1st Attempt) allowed WEM to determine the areas of upskilling that would be required for those participants that would be required to re-write the areas of the SSR Exam and successfully pass. 
  • WEM provided the Exam to the students on January 11, 2025. 

Workplace Education Manitoba (2) weeks 

  • Essential Skills Training was delivered for Reading, Document Use, Writing, Numeracy and Digital Technology (based on SSR results) 
  • Essential Skills Workshops; Safety Mindset, Communicating in the Workplace. 
  • Personal Management Skills – included decision making, positive attitude, stressors choices, motivations, affirmations. 
  • 4 Students completed the Project, 2 being offered full-time employment and 1 accepting their offer. 
  • 4 Students being removed from the program due to positive testing during the drug & alcohol screening (Mandatory Testing CKP) 
  • 1 student removed due to very poor attendance 

All-in-classroom training for the entire duration of this project was held at CKP in their training room.  Transportation was the responsibility of each student; there were no issues.  Students were paid by NMSC on a bi-weekly basis.
